Keep the Good Family Times Rolling

The holidays are over. The kids are back in school, you’re back at work, and it’s time to focus on those resolutions and 2017 goals. Before you’re overcome with deadlines and workout routines, take a moment to remember the good holiday memories you made this year with your family and friends. Was it around the table sharing a meal? Playing games? Looking at lights on the houses in your neighborhood?

With January in full swing, it can be easy to claim that there’s not time for these activities like there was in December. But I want to encourage you to make time – you’ll never regret a fun hour with your family and friends! Here are some ideas to help you make goals for family time in 2017:

1. Play a board game

Have you strolled through Target’s board game section recently? If not, I am here to tell you that there’s far more out there than Chutes & Ladders and Candy Land! Don’t get me wrong, both are great games and I have fond memories of them, but board games have stepped up their game (ha!) in the past few years with options for the whole family, no matter your age. Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Codenames are a few of me and my friends’ favorites. Check out a local gaming store in your area for other great ideas!

2. Eat at the table and turn your phones off

This is a hard one for me. It’s so easy to load my plate up and sit back down on the couch to continue my Netflix marathon while my husband reads articles on his phone. There’s no reason we shouldn’t unplug for a few minutes and talk without distractions. If your family is all eating at the same time, convince them to all sit together and put their phones away so you can share a conversation. Another good idea: have everyone put their phones in the middle of the table. Whoever gets a text first or reaches for their phone first has to do the dishes!

3. Go for a walk

My husband and I each got Fitbits for Christmas this year. I don’t know about you, but having a watch tell me to take a stroll is actually a pretty strong motivator to get off the couch! My husband and I have been going for more walks recently to reach our step counts, and it’s been nice to get out of the house, breathe some fresh air, and feel like we’re accomplishing a small fitness goal. If the weather is nice enough where you are, take the kids and go for a quick walk around the block. Bonus, if your kids are playing Pokémon Go, you can get your steps in and they can catch some Pokémon. Win win!

While the holidays may be over, I hope you can extend family time into 2017, and all year round!
