My Fall Bucket List

Fall (1)

Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love when the heat of summer goes away, replaced by the crisp autumn air. Football games, sweaters, boots, pumpkin spice lattes – this season is the best. This year, I decided to make a list of all fun fall things our family should enjoy. The pressures of work obligations, graduate school commitments and mommy responsibilities can feel never-ending, so I wanted to make a list of what we have to look forward to this season. I sat down with my three-year-old daughter, Ava, to brainstorm the fall activities we should put on our checklist. Here’s what we came up with.

  1. img_9155-e1473862646856-700x525Go to the pumpkin patch
The kids love to play in the corn pool, feed the animals, and pick out pumpkins.
  2. Bake cookies
Warm up the house with the smell of fresh cookies coming from the oven.
  3. Dress up for Halloween
Time to get their costumes picked out for this year!
  4. Drink hot apple cider
Is there anything better than sipping hot apple cider while walking through the pumpkin patch?
  5. Take family pictures
The fall colors, the leaves, the sweaters! It’s a perfect time to get pictures for our holiday card.
  6. Ava’s 4th birthday party
I love throwing birthday parties for my kids. I can’t believe my oldest will be four years old!
  7. Eat cider donuts
Our pumpkin patch has fantastic cider donuts that are not to be missed.
  8. Participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s with the Alpha Epsilon collegians at Iowa State
This will be the first Walk to End Alzheimer’s with my kids – and I hope to make it an annual tradition. Find a walk near you.
  9. Decorate the house for fall
I’ve got to get out all my pumpkins and make the house look festive!
  10. Bake pumpkin bread
I love to make mini loaves of pumpkin bread and give them to our family at Ava’s birthday party and also take some to share at work.
  11. Ava starts preschool and dance classes
We’ve been counting down the days until classes start. I’ve made a “first day of preschool” sign, we have school supplies, and her backpack is ready.
  12. Cheer for the Iowa State Cyclones
Football AND basketball in the same season – so many opportunities to cheer on our team!
  13. IMG_1992Celebrate Sigma Kappa Founders’ Day with the Alpha Epsilon collegiate chapter and Central Iowa alumnae chapter
After the Founders’ Day program, we pack boxes full of Maine Seacoast Mission donations.
  14. Make apple crisp
I need to find a tried and true apple crisp recipe. I think I’ll start with this one.
  15. Go to the Iowa State Cyclones Homecoming pep rally
Delicious BBQ, bouncy houses, and the marching band make this a fun night!
  16. Try butterscotch M&M’s
Have you seen these yet in the store? I’m on the hunt.
  17. Go on a hayride
It’s not fall until you’ve taken a hayride!
  18. Decorate pumpkins
We usually stick with painting pumpkins because my kids are little – eventually we’ll graduate to carving.
  19. Make crockpot meals
I love the convenience of using a slow cooker for meals. This is one of my favorite slow cooker recipes.
  20. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
The kids love watching all the huge balloons go by and it puts us in the mood for a fun Thanksgiving with family.
